TOWNSEND, rightfully called "THE PEACEFUL SIDE OF THE SMOKIES" is located at the South Entrance to the "GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK" and CADES COVE in East Tennessee. Townsend is 18 miles south of Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, 15 minutes East of Maryville, 45 Minutes East of Knoxville, 3 1/2-4 hrs North of Atlanta, 2 hrs. NE of Chattanooga and 3-3 1/2 hrs East of Nashville.

TOWNSEND, features Appalachian Living at it's finest. Previously called Tuchalechee Cove by the Indians and Early settlers it maintains it historical purity by offering scenic vistas, abundant wildlife  (birds, deer, elk and over 400 black bears), back woods trails and outdoor recreation. Our town features fine shops and restaurants, amusements and entertainment, biking trails, golfing ,caving, horseback riding, swimming, fishing in stocked mountain streams, river tubing in crystal clear waters and is within a stone's throw of  Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg where you'll discover Factory Outlet Mall shopping, fine dining, music theater entertainment, amusements and the Dollywood theme park. We have all the modern conveniences with the feel of a step back in time.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

The nation's most visited National Park is within a day's drive of half the nation's population. It attracts about twice as many visitors as any other park in the nation. The park is best known for more than 600 black bear that roam at will, 800 white tail deer, 200 different kinds of birds, 50 other kinds of fur bearing animals, 80 types of reptiles, and 80 kinds of fish.
The name "smoky" apparently came from the bluish haze that frequently hovers over the mountain like a blanket. One square mile of timbered slopes releases over one million gallons of water into the air each day. The Smokies were so hazy, the Cherokee Indians did not use smoke signals but had runners deliver messages. Smoke signal would get lost when they went above the tree tops.
The weather is always beautiful in the Smokies and every season has something unique to offer visitors.

Spring Time
The weather is generally mild. Spring sweeps through mountains like a green firestorm. Bees swarm, flowers bloom A cold snap can still come when the dogwood trees have put out their starched white blossoms. Mountain folk call it "dogwood winter."

Summer Time
Its a great time to head for the mountains and sit in a cool clear mountain stream or sit on your front porch in a rocking chair with a mountain breeze blowing through your chair.
Fall Time
Warm days for exploring and hiking to your favorite mountain trails, cool nights for your romantic settings around the cabin's fireplace.

Winter Time
Winter is a quiet, restorative time in the mountains. Its a great time for you also to heal with nature. Though winters are generally fairly mild, extreme temperatures are possible. By November snow can visit the high country. A foot or two can fall in a winter storm, normally snowfall is measured in inches. Florida license plates are common when the snow flies, the occupants of the vehicles laughing and throwing snowballs. Join the fun!!!

CADES COVE

This beautiful, sheltered valley is a mixture of forests, meadows, and an outdoor museum of pioneer life. Remnants of a more primitive way of life still exists in Cades Cove. Everyone can enjoy the Cove, whether by car, on foot, by horseback, or bicycle. Cades Cove is the best place to view the wildlife around the 11 mile loop road and stop and see the pioneer's cabins and churches of the era in history. It is a visit that will remain with you during your lifetime.                                                                                                             This mountain cove consists of 6,853 acres preserved as a historic area within our national park. Spring, summer, fall or winter, you will not want to miss Cades Cove while traveling through the Smokies.
Auto Tour
Without leaving your car, you may drive the eleven-mile, one-way, paved Loop Road. Deer and wild turkeys are frequently seen on this drive, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. Scenery along the way includes three churches and cemeteries which once served residents of Cove, the Cable Mill area, and several pioneer cabins and houses which have been preserved.

Cable Mill
Cable Mill is a water-powered grist mill which demonstrates the grinding of corn into meal. There is a Visitor Center at the site with restroom facilities. We recommend that as you enter Cades Cove, you stop and purchase a copy of the auto tour booklet published by the Great Smoky Mountain Natural History Association. It is available in a stand by the roadside at the beginning of the loop road and also at the Ranger's Station. The cost is about $1.00.
Bicycles
For touring Cades Cove at a more leisurely pace, bicycles may be rented (April through October) at the Cades Cove bike shop. On Saturdays from June through Labor Day, the Loop Road is closed to autos, and it is bicycles only from sunrise until 10 a.m.

Horseback Riding
Once the quickest mode of transportation in the mountains, you may rent horses by the hour at the Cades Cove Riding Stables. Guides will take you along cool, wooded trails, over small mountain brooks, and up to vistas of trees and wildflowers.

Hayrides
A fun and unusual way to see Cades Cove is from the back of a hay wagon from April through October. Departing from the Cades Cove Stables, the hayrides are available beginning at 6 p.m. Groups of 15 or more may reserve hay wagon for day trips beginning as early as 10 a.m.

Trails and Hiking
Only on foot can one really get a taste of the wilderness that the pioneers fought , depended on for raw materials, and most of all, loved. Abrams Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the National
Park, is reached only a 5 mile (round trip) hike. Longer trails to Gregory Bald or Spence Field are available for more veteran hikers.

Nature Lovers
Nature lovers can take the 1/3-mile self guided nature trail located half-mile behind the Cable Mill parking area on the Loop Road.

Picnicking
The picnic area is located near the campground . Grills and tables are provided, or you may pack a lunch and eat along a trail in the area.
