Easter on the "Peaceful Side": Your Guide to Townsend Traditions
Easter in the Great Smoky Mountains is a truly special time. As the redbuds and dogwoods begin to bloom and the mountain air turns sweet with spring, Townsend offers a serene alternative to the holiday hustle.
If you are staying with us at Smoky Cabins this Easter, here are the best ways to celebrate, from sunrise services to family-friendly egg hunts.
1. Easter Sunrise Services
There is nothing quite like watching the sun rise over the ridges of the Smokies on Easter morning.
-
Dancing Bear Lodge: Join the community for a beautiful, nondenominational Sunrise Service on the Lawn(April 5, 2026). It is open to the public and free to attend—just bring a warm jacket and a lawn chair!
-
Cades Cove: For a more private experience, many guests head into Cades Cove early. Watching the light hit the valley floor near the historic churches is a peaceful way to start your holiday.
2. Family Fun & Egg Hunts
If you have little ones in tow, there are plenty of spots nearby to find those hidden treasures:
-
Church of the Cove: Located right in Townsend, this local favorite typically hosts an Easter Egg Hut and special services for families.
-
Townsend/Great Smokies KOA: Often hosts "Easter Weekend" activities, including visits from the Easter Bunny and campground egg hunts.
-
Maryville Egg Hunts: Just a short drive away, Maryville hosts several large-scale events, including the Easter Egg Drop at Calvary Baptist and the Resurrection Egg Hunt at East Maryville Baptist.
3. Easter Brunch & Dining
Skip the cooking and enjoy a local feast. Because Easter is a popular time, we strongly recommend making reservations at least 1-2 weeks in advance.
-
Dancing Bear Appalachian Bistro: Their Easter Brunch at the Bistro is legendary. After the sunrise service, they offer a specialized menu featuring Appalachian classics and a Mimosa bar.
-
The Abbey at the Heartland Chapel: For a more casual holiday meal, grab a spot by the river. It’s the perfect place for "nurturing food for the heart and soul" while the kids play cornhole on the patio.
-
Apple Valley Mountain Village: Great for a casual breakfast or to pick up some local Easter basket treats and Smoky Mountain souvenirs.
4. Springtime Activities
Easter weekend is the perfect time to get outdoors before the summer crowds arrive:
-
Wildflower Walks: Take a hike on the Little River Trail or Chestnut Top Trail to see the spring "ephemerals" (wildflowers) in bloom.
-
Tuckaleechee Caverns: If the spring showers move in, head underground! The caverns stay a cool 58°F year-round and feature the stunning Silver Falls.
-
Cades Cove Loop: The 11-mile loop is a must for spotting black bears and their new cubs, which often begin to emerge this time of year.
